Atlantic Dinghy 2026

Equipment required for the voyage.

Boat Setup & Rigging

  • Wayfarer dinghy - modified
  • Mainsail and working jib
  • Spinnaker (for downwind sailing)
  • Storm sails
  • Spare halyards and sheets (main, jib, spinnaker)
  • Sail repair kit (tape, needles, thread, spare cloth)
  • Mast and boom (with ALL spare rigging parts)
  • Rigging tape and spare shackles
  • Masthead light (for overnight sailing)
  • Running lights (bow and stern)
  • Sea anchor and drogue
  • Oars (longest that fit, with spare oar locks)
  • Paddle (with telescopic handle, stowed in buoyancy compartment)
  • Bailers (two buckets with lids, plus Elvstrom or transom bailer if fitted)
  • Manual bilge pump (with sufficient hose)
  • Spare line/rope (various lengths for repairs, mooring, and lashing)
  • Repair kit (duct tape, sail repair tape, spare fittings, epoxy putty, tools)
  • Spare tiller and rudder (if possible)
  • Spare daggerboard or centerboard (depending on model of boat)
  • Boat spray cover
  • Waterproof bags and containers (for gear storage)
  • Dry bags (for electronics, food, and clothing)
  • Anti-slip deck tape (for improved grip and safety)
  • Trapeze wires (with fittings and spares)


Safety & Emergency Equipment

  • Lifejacket x 2
  • Buoyant line (minimum 15 m)
  • Distress signals (flares, minimum 3, or watertight torches for night use)
  • VHF marine radio (waterproof, with DSC/GPS)
  • EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon)
  • PLB (Personal Locator Beacon)
  • AIS transponder or transeiver
  • Sound signalling device (horn or whistle)
  • Man-overboard light/strobe
  • First aid kit (waterproof, comprehensive)
  • Emergency blanket and thermal protection
  • Emergency rations and water (in addition to normal provisions)
  • Emergency bivvy
  • Knife x2 (with marlinspike and shackler)
  • Floating waterproof torch (multiple, with spare batteries)
  • Fire extinguisher (if carrying stove or fuel onboard)
  • Radar reflector (for visibility to larger vessels)

  • Magnetic compass (mounted and handheld)
  • GPS/chartplotter (waterproof, with spare batteries)

  • Dividers, parallel rules, and plotting instruments
  • Nautical almanac and tide tables
  • Logbook and waterproof pen

  • Sleeping bag (rated for cold/wet conditions)

  • Camping stove and fuel (for cooking at sea)
  • Cooking utensils (pot, mug, bowl, cutlery)
  • Boat cover or boom tent (for shelter at sea)
  • Waterproof groundsheet or tarp


Food & Water

  • Dehydrated or freeze-dried meals (Expedition Foods, 3 per day, plus extra for emergencies)
  • Dry staples (pasta, rice, oatmeal, granola)
  • Canned meat and vegetables
  • Energy bars, nuts, dried fruit, crackers, chocolate
  • Condiments (salt, pepper, sugar, oil, tobasco, coffee/tea, powdered milk)
  • Water (minimum 3 liters per day, plus emergency supply—plan for 14–21 days)
  • Water containers (durable, sealable)
  • Emergency water maker
  • Garbage bags (for waste management)
  • Wet wipes and hand sanitiser


Clothing & Personal Gear

  • Waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Warm layers (fleece, wool, thermal underwear)
